Boiler NFPA85 Compliance and Documentation

The NFPA sets the benchmark for boiler safety. NFPA85 code is written specifically for Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards. It goes without saying that all Industrial and Commercial boilers should, at minimum, comply with NFPA85 guidelines. This code has been written to address fundamental safety issues and it has been referred to having been "written in blood" describing every code requirement is because of an accident and is written to addresses what caused it.

Collins Combustion offers boiler safety inspection services for NFPA85 compliance. If a company truly is concerned with the safety of its employees, it should verify that it's boiler control system meets NFPA85 guidelines.

Meeting NFPA85 code requirements may not be the only safety requirements a company has. Quite often boilers are located in classified areas. Classified areas describe the environment the boiler must run in. Sometimes boilers are required to run with explosive gases or highly combustible materials that are or must be assumed are present. These materials can be flammable dust from the products that are manufactured or even from the fuel that the boiler burns. Depending on the standards adopted from the chosen safety organization classified areas can have different terminology and requirements. Class 1 Division 2, Class 1 Division 1 are just one example of many different terminologies used.

Boiler control system panels and devices located in classified areas must be intrinsically safe. These devices must operate on low voltage and thus not be capable of producing a spark. Control systems can have purging air and sealed conduit with explosion proof junction boxes and explosion proof field instrumentation. Control systems may even go so far as to have loop isolators installed for safety interlock switches to lower the voltage going to the switching devices "dry contacts" to prevent sparks. These are extreme measures taken to prevent any possible chance of creating a spark and are usually in Class 1 DIV 1 areas where it is assumed there are explosive gases or explosive material in the area.
